Hidden Charges Academy · Lesson 3

Reading your statement like a detective

Short answer

Your statement hides four things worth checking every month: every transaction (30 seconds of scanning catches fraud early), the finance charges line (if it is not ₹0, something went wrong last month), your utilisation (spent ÷ limit), and small recurring charges from subscriptions you forgot.

Your monthly statement is the only complete record of what the card did. Two minutes with it, once a month, is the highest-return habit in this entire path.

1. Every transaction line

Scan the list, top to bottom. You are looking for anything you do not recognise — including small amounts, because card testing often starts with a tiny transaction to check whether the card is live.

If something is wrong, report it immediately and ask for a complaint reference. Under RBI's customer-liability framework, reporting within three working days can leave your liability at zero. The mechanism for merchant disputes is a chargeback, and it has deadlines — act in days, not months.

2. The "finance charges" line

This is the single most informative number on the page.

  • ₹0 — the card is working exactly as intended. Nothing to do.
  • Anything else — something went wrong last month. Find out what: an unpaid balance, a cash withdrawal, an EMI interest component, or a payment that arrived after the due date.
Finance charges appearing for the first time usually mean the grace period has switched off. Until the balance reaches ₹0, new purchases keep accruing interest from the day you make them.

3. Your utilisation

Take the statement balance and divide it by your credit limit. Both numbers are on page one.

Over ~30%? Either pay part of the bill before the next statement generates, or ask for a limit increase you do not intend to use. This is the number bureaus see, and it is worth roughly 30% of your credit score.

4. Small recurring charges

Forgotten subscriptions love hiding in a long list: a trial that converted, an app you stopped using, a service billed annually that you meant to cancel eleven months ago.

A useful annual ritual: Once a year, read twelve months of statements in one sitting and list every recurring debit. Most people find at least one they had entirely forgotten — and cancelling it is a permanent raise.

The two-minute routine

  1. Scan every transaction.
  2. Check finance charges = ₹0.
  3. Divide balance by limit.
  4. Note any recurring debit you cannot name.
Make it a ritual: Statement day is a two-minute monthly health check. Attach it to something you already do — the day it arrives, before you pay the bill.

That completes the Hidden Charges Academy. With charges at ₹0, rewards finally become worth understanding: the Rewards Masterclass is next.

All figures on this page are indicative and dated. Rates and fees differ by bank and change over time. Always verify with your bank's official schedule of charges.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check on my credit card statement every month?

Four things: every transaction line for anything you do not recognise, the finance charges line (it should read ₹0), your statement balance against your limit, and small recurring debits from subscriptions you no longer use.

What do I do if I find a transaction I did not make?

Report it to the bank immediately through the app or the official helpline, ask for the card to be blocked, and note the complaint reference number. Under RBI's rules on unauthorised transactions, reporting within three working days can mean zero liability.
