πŸ”₯ Interest (finance charges)

Short answer

Finance charges are the interest a card levies when you do not pay the Total Amount Due in full β€” typically 36–48% a year (about 3–4% a month, indicative as of 2026). It applies to your entire balance, not just the unpaid part, and it switches off the interest-free period on new purchases.

What it is

Finance charges are the price of using a credit card as credit rather than as a payment instrument. The moment your bill is not cleared in full, the card converts into a loan at one of the highest legal rates an ordinary person can access.

Why it exists

The interest-free period is a genuine cost to the bank. It is offered on the expectation that a meaningful share of customers will not clear their bills, and those customers fund a large part of the business. Nothing about that is hidden β€” but nothing about it is advertised either.

How much it is (indicative, as of 2026)

Written asAnnual equivalent
2.5% per month~30% a year
3.5% per month~42% a year
3.99% per month~48% a year

Rates vary by bank, card variant and sometimes by customer profile. Your exact figure is in the card's schedule of charges.

The part that surprises people

Two mechanics do most of the damage:

  1. It applies to the entire balance. Not just the amount you left unpaid.
  2. New purchases lose their grace period. Until the balance returns to β‚Ή0, everything you buy accrues interest from the day of purchase.

Neither is a bank quirk. The RBI Master Direction on credit cards states that where the total amount due is not cleared by the payment due date, the interest-free credit period is lost and interest may be levied from the date of the transaction.

This is why one missed full-payment can turn into months of charges. The unpaid amount may be small; the loss of the interest-free window on everything that follows is what compounds.

How to make it β‚Ή0

The whole defence in one line: Pay the Total Amount Due, in full, every month. Set autopay to "Total Amount Due" β€” not "Minimum Due" β€” and add a reminder three days before your due date as a backstop.

If you are already carrying a balance: stop using the card until it clears, pay far more than the minimum, and ask the bank about converting the outstanding to a structured EMI (get the rate and processing fee in writing first). Never take a cash advance to pay a card bill.

Check it monthly

Your statement has a line called finance charges. If it reads β‚Ή0, the card is working as intended. If it does not, find out what happened last month β€” that is the two-minute habit in reading your statement like a detective.

Frequently asked questions

How is credit card interest calculated in India?

Most issuers calculate it daily on the outstanding balance from the transaction date until payment, then bill the total monthly. That is why a partial payment mid-cycle still leaves interest on the days the balance was outstanding, and why clearing the balance fully is the only way to reach zero.

Can I get finance charges reversed?

Occasionally, as a one-time goodwill gesture, especially if this is your first slip and you have otherwise paid on time. Call and ask politely, but treat it as a favour and not a plan β€” interest already accrued is normally not reversed.
