Overlimit
Short answer
Overlimit is spending beyond your credit limit. Under the RBI Master Direction the bank needs your explicit consent to allow it at all — and without that consent, no overlimit fee can be charged. Even with consent it is expensive company: a fee per instance, interest from day one on the excess, and a utilisation reading above 100% that bruises your score.
What it means
Card networks can approve transactions slightly beyond your limit — for a price. The RBI Master Direction on credit cards made this strictly opt-in: the facility, its fee, everything requires your explicit consent, and a bank that lets a transaction through without it cannot levy an overlimit charge.
The common mistake
Confusing "the transaction went through" with "this is fine". An approval past your limit is not a courtesy — it is the most expensive credit on the card. The excess accrues interest immediately, the fee lands on the next statement, and the month's utilisation reports above 100%.
The subtlety worth knowing
Interest and fees themselves can push you over the limit — you can go overlimit without buying anything. This is how a maxed-out card that receives only minimum payments drifts into overlimit territory on its own. The escape is the same as ever: pay more than the minimum, earlier than the due date.

Frequently asked questions
Should I opt in to the overlimit facility?
For most people, no. A declined transaction at the counter is mildly awkward; an overlimit month is a fee, immediate interest and a score dent. If you regularly brush against your limit, the better fix is a consented limit increase or a second payment mid-cycle.
I was charged an overlimit fee but never opted in. What do I do?
Dispute it in writing and cite the consent requirement in RBI's credit card directions. Ask for reversal of the fee and any interest on it. If the bank does not resolve it in 30 days, escalate to the RBI Ombudsman free of cost.
