Fuel surcharge
Short answer
The fuel surcharge is roughly 1% (indicative, as of 2026) added when you pay at a petrol pump by card — a hangover from how fuel transactions are processed. Many cards advertise a surcharge waiver, but read the shape of it: waivers come with per-transaction bands, monthly caps, and usually refund the surcharge but not the GST charged on it.
What it means
Fuel is a thin-margin, high-volume category with its own processing economics, and the industry's answer was a surcharge on card payments at pumps. Banks then turned the irritation into a feature: fuel-branded and premium cards waive it, within limits.
The common mistake
Choosing a card for the waiver without doing the arithmetic. A 1% waiver capped at ₹250 is worth at most ₹3,000 a year, and only if your fuel spending fits the bands. That is a real but small number — never worth a high annual fee on its own, and never worth forgoing a card whose rewards beat 1% everywhere.
The subtlety worth knowing
Surcharge reversals typically post on the next statement, not instantly — so the statement you pay includes the surcharge, and the credit arrives later. It is not missing; it is lagging. Check two statements before disputing.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my card has a fuel surcharge waiver?
It is in the schedule of charges and the MITC, with its bands and caps - for example, waiver on transactions between ₹400 and ₹4,000, capped at a few hundred rupees a month. The card's marketing page will say waiver; the schedule tells you the actual arithmetic.
Why did I still pay something despite the waiver?
Usually GST. The waiver reverses the surcharge itself, but the 18% GST levied on that surcharge is often not reversed. On a full tank the difference is a few rupees - real, just small. Transactions outside the waiver band get no reversal at all.
