Fee reversal

Short answer

A fee reversal is the bank cancelling a charge — and for a first late fee on a long-clean account or an annual fee on a card you might close, a polite, specific request succeeds far more often than people expect. Goodwill reversals are a retention budget. The escalation path when a charge is actually *wrong* is different: dispute in writing, and after 30 days unresolved, the RBI Ombudsman, free of cost.

What it means

Two different machines, one word. Goodwill reversal: the fee was valid, and the bank waives it to keep a good customer — discretionary, quota-driven, granted to those who ask well. Dispute reversal: the fee was wrong, and reversing it is an obligation with a regulatory backstop — the RBI Complaint Management System — behind it.

The common mistake

Not asking, or asking angrily. The first-late-fee reversal in particular has a high hit rate on clean accounts: the bank's own arithmetic says a ₹1,000 fee is bad trade for losing a profitable customer. People pay it silently out of embarrassment. The bank is not embarrassed; neither should you be.

The subtlety worth knowing

Every reversal should carry its GST with it — a ₹950 fee reversed should return ₹1,121. Check the credit line on the next statement, and remember reversals lag a cycle. If the fee came back off but the GST stayed, that is one more polite message.

Frequently asked questions

What is the script for a late-fee reversal?

Short and factual: account in good standing for N years, first slip, bill now paid in full, requesting a goodwill reversal of the fee and its GST. Ask on the app or helpline; escalate once to email if refused. Do not threaten - the request works because you are cheap to keep, not because you shouted.

When should I take a fee to the Ombudsman?

Only when the charge is wrong, not merely unwelcome: an overlimit fee without consent, a late fee despite on-time payment, a fee after a confirmed closure. First a written complaint to the bank; if 30 days pass without resolution, file at the RBI complaint portal. Goodwill requests are not Ombudsman material - wrongful charges are.
