CIBIL Ki Pathshala

What a credit score is, what actually moves it up and down, and the myths that hurt people.

4 lessons

Short answer

CIBIL Ki Pathshala is a free four-lesson path on the credit score India actually runs on: what the 300–900 number means, the five factors that move it (payment history matters most, at roughly 35%), the myths that quietly damage real scores, and the legitimate ways to build a score from nothing.

Your credit score is the number that decides, years from now, whether your home loan comes at a good rate or an expensive one. Almost nobody is taught how it is built β€” usually because the people explaining it are trying to sell something at the same time.

This path is four short lessons and nothing else.

What you will learn

  1. What is this 'score' everyone fears? β€” the 300–900 scale, who maintains it, and what the bands mean in practice.
  2. The 5 things that actually move your score β€” with rough weights, so you know where effort pays.
  3. Myths that damage real scores β€” the four beliefs that cost people points and money.
  4. New to credit? Your starter path β€” how to build history from zero without paying for the privilege.

The short version, if you only read this page

Pay every bill on time. Keep your credit utilisation under about 30%. Do not close your oldest card. Do not apply for several cards in a short burst. Check your own report at least once a year β€” it is free at each bureau, and self-checks never cost you points.

A number, not a verdict: A score is a summary of behaviour over time, not a judgement of you. It moves slowly in both directions, which is frustrating when you are repairing it and reassuring once it is healthy.

What we will not do here

No score-boosting services, no "repair" products, no lead forms. When a page mentions a bureau, it is to tell you where to check your own report free β€” not to send you anywhere. Read the honesty policy for the full commitment.

Frequently asked questions

Is CIBIL the only credit score in India?

No. CIBIL (TransUnion CIBIL) is the best known, but Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark are also RBI-licensed bureaus in India. Lenders may pull any of them, so your score can differ slightly between bureaus.

Does checking my own score reduce it?

No. Checking your own report is a soft inquiry and has no effect on the score. Only a hard inquiry β€” a lender checking your report because you applied for credit β€” can cost a few points temporarily.
