Virtual card
Short answer
A virtual card is a digital card number issued on your existing account β same bill, same limit, different number. Because it exists only in the app, it can be created instantly, capped with its own limit, and blocked in one tap without touching your real card. It is the right number to give a website you do not fully trust.
What it means
The plastic card in your wallet is one representation of your account. Banks can issue others β digital numbers with their own expiry and CVV, managed entirely in the app. Spending on them lands on the same statement.
The common mistake
Thinking the protection is secrecy. The real protection is disposability: the number is cheap to destroy. Treat virtual cards as consumables β one per sketchy merchant β rather than one precious second number you reuse everywhere, which just recreates the original problem.
The subtlety worth knowing
Virtual cards and tokenisation solve the same problem from opposite ends. Tokenisation protects the number the merchant stores; a virtual card protects you even at merchants where you type the number fresh. Used together, your real card number almost never leaves the bank.

Frequently asked questions
Is a virtual card a separate credit card?
No. It draws on the same account and limit and appears on the same statement. Think of it as an alias for your card, not a second card β there is no new application, no inquiry, no separate bill.
When should I use a virtual card instead of my real one?
First purchases on unfamiliar sites, free trials that demand a card, and any subscription you expect to cancel. If the merchant misbehaves, you kill that one number and every other payment you have set up keeps working.
